At the end of January I took up a position as Hut Ranger for DOC (Department of Conservation) at Moturau Hut on the stunning Kepler Track. I had wanted to be involved in conservation work for a while and this enabled me to do my music and touring alongside since it is week on and off and for part of the year only.
It feels as if it is the beginning of a fortuitous journey coming at a time when I was looking for a way to re-invigorate the long and rather lonely road of research and writing. This time among our stunning Fiordland mountains, native forest, lakes and bird life felt as much a part of me as any of the music I have written. What I didn't foresee was how soon the music would become part of my hut talks - a natural extension to the stories of our environment and a whole new audience for the songs.
Passing stories that I have and am discovering onto others through magical settings - whether than be in our natural landscape or on theatrical stages is a way to open up history in a way that brings it into the present and helps inform our future.
You never know where your path will lead you but as long as you follow your heart it leads you to where dreams do come true...
